ESCWA Visiting Experts Discuss Women, Peace and Security
ESCWA organizes an expert group meeting tomorrow Wednesday 25 June 2014, on the issue of Women, Peace and Security. Participants will review the findings of the regional study entitled “Identification of legislative gaps for the full implementation of Security Council Resolution 1325 (SCR 1325) in the Arab Region” at the UN-House, Riad Solh Avenue, Beirut. The meeting concludes on 26 June 2014.
The meeting is part of the work of ESCWA’s Centre for Women (ECW), and specifically its focus on the implementation of a project on “Institutional and capacity building for Arab Parliaments and other stake holders for the implementation of SCR 1325 (2000) on Women, Peace and Security”, in partnership with the Economic Commission Africa (ECA), sub-regional office for North Africa and the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
The meeting opens at 9:00 AM, with statements by ESCWA ECW Director Samira Atallah, Information Officer and Focal Point for Gender and Governance in UN ECA Houda Mejri, and Director of Division for Women, Family and Childhood at the League of Arab States (LAS) Enas Mekkawy. Participants in the meeting are legal experts from national machineries, ministries and women committees from ESCWA Member States, in addition to experts on the implementation of SCR 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.
In addition to the discussion of the study, the meeting aims to share experiences and best practices on the implementation of SCR 1325; and discuss the outline of training manuals on the implementation of the Resolution.
ESCWA is implementing a project on “Institutional and capacity building for Parliaments in selected Arab countries and other stakeholders to implement Security Council Resolution (SCR) 1325 on Women, Peace and Security”. The project’s goal is to build the capacity of Arab parliaments in seven target countries (Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen, Tunisia and Libya) to address gaps in implementation of SCR 1325 in their respective countries. The project also includes the production of a regional study that examines the gaps in legislation for the implementation of SCR 1325. Results of the study will feed into four training manuals for Parliamentarians.
