ESCWA Observes International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People

ESCWA is observing the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People (29 November) at 10:00 AM on Friday 28 November 2014 at the UN House, Beirut. This year’s event features songs from the Palestinian heritage performed by Ashra Al Shouli, and statements by guest speaker Mireille Fanon-Mendez-France, United Nations Secretary-General delivered by Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Derek Plumbly, and by Deputy Secretary-General and ESCWA Executive Secretary Rima Khalaf. Official statements also include the speech of Palestine, delivered by Palestinian Minister for Agriculture and Social Affairs Shawki Al Issa and the speech of Lebanon. Short films will be projected throughout the opening ceremony. The event also features a Palestinian folklore exhibition and three photo exhibitions: UNRWA Archive, “For Their Sake” by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and The “Better World Project: Justice and Peace for Palestine” by Lebanese photographer George Rabbath. Preceding the event, ESCWA and the Asfari Institute for Civil Society and Citizenship at the American University of Beirut are organizing a seminar at 4:00 PM on Thursday 27 November at Le Commodore Hotel in Hamra. The seminar is entitled “Palestine, the Occupation, and the Fourth Geneva Convention: Reinvigorating International Law in the Occupied Territory”. Speakers are Expert in International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law Professor Karim El-Mufti, and Professor of International Law and Conflict Resolution Mireille Fanon-Mendes-France. The seminar will be moderated by Lawyer and Legal Researcher Nizar Saghiyeh. The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is marked in accordance with the UN General Assembly Resolutions 32/40B of 2 December 1977 and 64/17 of 21 January 2010. The ESCWA Communication and Information Unit (ECIU) kindly requests media institutions to take part in this event and submit the names of their delegates by Thursday 27 November 2014 on the following numbers: 70-993144, 03-910930, 76-046402. On Friday, the media should be in the event’s hall no later than 9:30 AM. This arrangement is required in order to facilitate the access of media representatives to the UN House.
