Beirut, Lebanon

ESCWA ES meets Lebanese Minister of Women Affairs

During last Friday visit paid by ESCWA Executive Secretary Mohamed Ali Alhakim to the Lebanese Minister of State for Women's Affairs Jean Ogassapian, the two sides discussed the possibility of setting a framework aimed to increase the technical cooperation provided by ESCWA. The two sides also agreed on launching a first model of a national strategy against Gender Based Violence (GBV) that ESCWA will implement in partnership with the ministry and in cooperation with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Lebanon. They also explored the possibility of expanding their mutual cooperation so that it involves all ESCWA divisions, on the grounds that enhancing the status of women is also linked to economic and social development, technology for sustainable development, statistics, water, energy, environment, regional conflicts which have their own impact on women in particular.

The meeting was attended by Director of the Centre for Women at ESCWA, Mehrinaz Elawady and Minister Ogassapian’s advisor, Abir Chebaro.

Alhakim’s visit to the Ministry of Women’s Affairs in Lebanon was the first out of several scheduled ones to the specialised ministries, given the great importance that ESCWA gives to the situation of women across member states.
