Egyptian Minister of Transport to Inaugurate UN-ESCWA Expert Group Meeting on International Multimodal Transport
Egyptian Minister of Transport Mohammad Mansour will be inaugurating the Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on International Multimodal Transport in the Western Asia region organized by UN-ESCWA (the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia) on 4-6 September 2007 at the Triumph Hotel, Heliopolis, Cairo.
The three-day meeting, which will open at 9:30 am on Tuesday, is intended to discuss the second draft of a proposed Agreement on International Multimodal Transport of Goods in the Arab Mashreq.
As recommended by the 8th session of its Transport Committee (Beirut, 27-29 March 2007), UN-ESCWA has prepared a second draft of the proposed agreement according to amendments and comments suggested by member countries on the first draft. The EGM will discuss the second draft. UN-ESCWA will then prepare the final draft that will be presented to the Transport Committee during its 9th session to be held during the first quarter of 2008 for approval and later on to the 25th Ministerial Session of UN-ESCWA scheduled to be held in April 2008 for adoption and signature at the ministerial level.
In addition, the meeting will discuss the most important components of the Integrated Transport System in the Arab Mashreq (ITSAM). These selected components are the Agreement on International Roads in the Arab Mashreq, the Agreement on International Railways in the Arab Mashreq, the national committees for the facilitation of transport and trade, and road traffic safety.
Experts and officials concerned with multimodal transport will attend the meeting. These will also include experts in road transport, road safety, and the facilitation of transport and trade, and customs procedures. A number of representatives from relevant regional Arab organizations and unions have also been invited, together with selected national consultants.
