Dubai Hosts Two ESCWA Meetings Next Week

The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is organizing a workshop and an expert group meeting in Dubai, on issues of trade facilitation and transport, from 9 to 11 April 2013. In cooperation with the Islamic Development Bank, ESCWA is holding a “Regional training Workshop on Trade Facilitation, Infrastructure and Trade Costs Policies in ESCWA region” at the Movenpick Deira Hotel, Dubai. The workshop opens at 9:00 AM on introductory remarks by Islamic Development Bank representative Elmostafa Aitamor, ESCWA Senior Economist and Director of the Economic and Globalization Division Abdallah El Dardari, and the representative of the UAE Ministry of Foreign Trade. The workshop will offer the countries in the region an opportunity to discuss the concept of trade costs, methods of measurement and policy priorities for reducing this cost. The workshop will aim at building technical capacity of nationals dealing with behind the border trade facilitation with a view to enhancing trade flows and promoting growth. Expert Meeting The workshop is followed by an expert group meeting on Trade and Transport Facilitation in ESCWA region, on 10-11 April 2013, at Movenpick Deira Hotel. The meeting opens at 9:00 AM on Wednesday 10 April, with welcome remarks by Assistant Undersecretary for Economic Policies in the UAE Ministry of Economy, Mohamed Saleh Shalawah, Chief economist and Director of Economic Development and Globalization Division in ESCWA Abdallah AlDardari, and Deputy Director of the Trade and Agriculture Directorate in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Raed Safadi. Among other things, the meeting aims at discussing issues related to trade logistics including customs procedures, technical investigations, transport, freight forwarding, technology and communications and their impact on trade expansion and growth in the region with a view to boosting intra/extra trade. Non Tariff Measures (NTMs), including technical barriers to trade, on exports to selected countries and/or regions will also be presented and discussed. The meeting will provide a forum for exchanging experiences and sharing good practices.
