Dubai Hosts the Arab Regional Implementation Meeting

How do the resolutions of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (RIO +20) held in Brazil in June 2012 reflect on the Arab region? This is the main axis of the “Arab Regional Implementation Meeting,” organized by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), in partnership with the League of Arab States (LAS), the UN Environment Program/Regional Office of Western Asia (UNEP/ROWA), and in collaboration with the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Environment and Water and the Zayed International Foundation for the Environment, from 29 to 30 May 2013 at the Dubai police academy, UAE. The meeting opens at 8:30 AM on Wednesday 29 May, with welcome statements by high-level representatives from the United Arab Emirates, ESCWA, LAS, and UNEP. The Arab RIM aims to provide a platform for deliberating on the main outcomes of Rio+20 and their implications for sustainable development agenda in the Arab region, and identifying and discussing priorities for implementation as per the priorities and needs of sustainable development in the Arab region. The outcomes, findings and recommendations from the RIM will be reflected in an outcome document to be included in the final meeting report, which will be submitted to the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (CSD-20) in view of ensuring an Arab regional contribution to Rio+20 follow-up. ESCWA is one of the five UN regional commissions. It provides a framework for the formulation and harmonization of sectoral policies for member countries; a platform for congress and coordination; a home for expertise and knowledge, and an information observatory. ESCWA aims at supporting economic and social cooperation between the region’s countries and promoting development process in order to achieve regional integration. Libya, the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Tunisia became members of ESCWA in September 2012. By this new membership, the number of ESCWA countries rose to 17, including: Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, The Sudan, The Syrian Arab Republic, The United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
