Continuous Cooperation between ESCWA and GOIC

Beirut, 22 June 2010 (UN Information Service) — The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) signed on 20 June a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Gulf Organization for Industrial Consulting (GOIC). This MoU represents a statement of intent by the parties to work together and outlines the basis, collaboration and joint activities in fields of mutual interest. In the signing ceremony held in Qatar, ESCWA was represented by its Executive Secretary Bader Omar AlDafa, and GOIC by its Acting Secretary-General Loulwa Bint Abdullah Al Musnad. This MoU, which follows a series of cooperation with ESCWA, aims at facilitating the partnership between the two organizations and the networks of their programs and projects, thereby enhancing GOIC’s overall mission related to member countries’ industrial development. It also seeks to increase ESCWA abilities to promote its projects and activities in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, including the least developed countries such as Yemen, candidate for GCC membership in 2012. The MoU identifies the areas of cooperation between both parties as skill-enhancing training for employment, support-building programs, workshops and seminars, technical cooperation for workforce development, know-how and logistics’ outsourcing. GOIC works on strengthening integration and industrial coordination between its seven members countries; the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait and Yemen. It targets developing industries throughout the region by means of providing the public and private industrial and economic sectors with distinctive knowledge, through a complete set of specialized research, information, consultancy, training and technical services. ESCWA provides a framework for the formulation and harmonization of sectoral policies for its fourteen member countries; Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, UAE and Yemen. The commission is considered as a platform for congress and coordination, a home for expertise and knowledge, and an information observatory. ESCWA activities are coordinated with the divisions and main offices of the Headquarters of the United Nations, specialized agencies, and international and regional organizations, including the League of Arab States, and the Gulf Cooperation Council.
