Combating Violence against Women in an ESCWA Panel Discussion
As the 8th of March of each year has become a worldwide event that places women at its centre, ESCWA Deputy Executive Secretary Nadim Khoury, Senior ESCWA Economist Abdallah Al Dardari, Former Minister of State for the Lebanese Parliament’s Affairs Wafa Al Diqa Hamzeh, Deputy Director of the Middle East and North Africa Program at the International Center for Transitional Justice Anne Massagee, and Director of KAFA Enough Violence and Exploitation Zoya Rohana, gather to speak against violence against women.
The celebration is held by ESCWA to commemorate International Women’s Day, at 1:15 PM on Friday 8 March, at the UN House, Riad Solh square, and opens with a statement for UN Under-Secretary-General and ESCWA Executive Secretary Rima Khalaf delivered by Nadim Khoury, and an introduction by Director of the ESCWA Centre for Women Samira Atallah.
A panel discussion will then be held with interventions by Al Dardari, Al Diqa Hamzeh, Massagee, and Rohana, moderated by Human Rights Expert and Former Regional Representative of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Middle East Fateh Azzam, as well as Atallah.
Participating in the discussion are UN officials, representatives of non-governmental organizations working on women’s rights, and a host of activists, media and academia. The main theme of discussions will be “Eliminating all Forms of Violence Against Women and Girls”, in line with the theme of the 57th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW): “Elimination and Prevention of all Forms of Violence against Women and Girls”, held in New York on 4-15 March 2013.
