ESCWA and UN-Habitat held three virtual workshops for the cities of Beirut, Kuwait City and Alexandria, on 29 March, 15 April and 10 May respectively, to present and validate a diagnostic and planning tool for capturing cities’ economic resilience to COVID-19.
The workshops form part of the “Building Urban Economic Resilience during and after COVID-19” project, implemented by different UN entities in 16 cities around the world. Centering on the “recovering better” principle, the project proposes measures for planning and building resilient cities, advocating for a multi-hazard, multi-sectoral and multi-stakeholder approach that promotes the green and circular economy and helps to overcome inequalities.
The workshops discussed local development priorities and areas of focus for recovery. Participants proposed key actions to achieve the desired vision for enhanced urban economic resilience and discussed the needed institutional arrangements for recovery.
