Arabic Script Use on Internet on UN-ESCWA Agenda

Arabic script on the internet will be the main subject of an expert group meeting (EGM) organized by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA), in cooperation with "Afilias" Global Registry Services and ".org" Public Interest Registry, and hosted by the Egyptian National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) on 8-10 November 2008 in Intercontinental Citystars Hotel, Cairo, Egypt. The meeting opens at 09:00 am on Saturday 8 November. It will be attended by the Arabic Script in Internationalized Domain Names Working Group, as well as experts and officials from the Arab region and foreign countries that use the Arabic script, to discuss global harmonization of guidelines related to the use of Arabic characters in Internet Domain Names. In particular, deliberations in this meeting will revolve around: Arabic characters that should be allowed or prohibited; considerations for other non-Arabic languages using the Arabic script such as the Farsi and Urdu languages; engaging North African countries; and drawing a roadmap for the next phase of the implementation of the Arabic Domain Names initiative. UN-ESCWA is one of the five UN Regional Commissions. It is comprised of 13 member countries: Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the Sudan, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. Its objective is to support economic and social cooperation among the countries of the region and promote the development process in order to achieve regional integration.
