Senior leaders from the UN and the League of Arab States (LAS) will gather tomorrow to discuss issues related to the UN Secretary-General’s new reform agenda as well as strategic entry points to support the realization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The opening session, which will start at 10:00 AM on Monday, the 20th November, will feature remarks by Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of LAS, as well as by Mr. Mohamed Ali Alhakim, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of UN-ESCWA in his capacity as Chair of the RCM Secretariat and Mr. Mourad Wahba, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, Assistant Administrator of the UN Development Program (UNDP) and Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Arab States.

The RCM focuses on regional development priorities and calls for a common vision and approach among regional development partners. Members include all UN regional agencies, LAS, and representatives from regional and international funding institutions, such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

This year’s RCM will explore the implications of the Secretary-General’s ambitious reform agenda, and in particular how it will affect the UN Development System. The UN Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Amina Mohamed is expected to share her views on what the proposed reform will mean for the region, as it moves to accelerate the pace of implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The meeting will also explore interactions between the SDGs, examining ways to draw on positive interlinkages while avoiding trade-offs. Members will analyze entry points for UN agencies to promote an integrated, cross-sectoral approach to policy making in the context of the 2030 Agenda, while seeking to enhance existing multi-stakeholder partnerships.
