The tenth session of the Committee on Transport was held in Beirut from 31 March to 2 April 2009 and discussed the items included in the session agenda. This report contains the recommendations adopted by the session as well as a brief account of the major points raised in the discussions. The report was adopted by the Committee at its fina l meeting, which was held on 2 April 2009. Discussions focused on the following topics: harmonization of institutional frameworks and legislation in the transport sector in the region of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA); request by the Sudan to accede to the three transport-related agreements adopted by ESCWA; and follow-up on the implementation of recommendations made during the ninth session of the Committee. The Committee reviewed a paper containing the main results of the Expert Group Meeting on the Harmonization of Institutional Frameworks and Legislation in the Transport Sector in the ESCWA
Region, which was organized by ESCWA in cooperation with the Ministry of Transport in Syria, and held in Damascus on 12 and 13 November 2008. The Committee also reviewed the recommendations presented, discussed and adopted at the ninth session. The Committee adopted a number of recommendations, some of which were general, while others were related to the topics set forth in the session agenda, particularly the issue of the accession of the Sudan to the three transport-related agreements adopted under the aegis of ESCWA.
