ESCWA Launches “Under an Olive Tree in Palestine” Poster

Palestine Poster - English.JPG

"Under an Olive Tree in Palestine" is the slogan of a poster launched today by ESCWA as part of its efforts to raise awareness about the socio-economic repercussions of Israeli occupation in Palestine, including settlements and the policies of blockades and closures. The poster was distributed to UN headquarters in New York, Geneva, Vienna and to many UN agencies in Lebanon. ESCWA also provided the Palestinian Authority and some non-governmental organizations with copies for use and circulation. ESCWA chose to attach to the slogan a verse by late Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish, known for his writings on revolutions and motherland, which reads: "Here we stand…here we remain…with one purpose…with one goal…to be." The poster was designed by Hind Khaled of Lebanon, after ESCWA provided her with all necessary materials it contains. The poster features general information about Israeli occupation; settlements and settlers' violence; disproportionate use of force and arbitrary detention; blockade, closures and the wall; natural and ecological resources in Palestine; demolition of homes, lands’ confiscation and displacement of Palestinians; resilience and determination; and the social and economic consequence of Israeli occupation. The poster came as part of updating an annual report issued by ESCWA under the titled "Economic and social repercussions of the Israeli occupation on the living conditions of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and of the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan". ESCWA is currently preparing to mark the "International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People," which is observed annually on 29 November. The event will be attended by many Arab and foreign officials and diplomats, in addition to representatives from Lebanese and Palestinian civil society organizations.
