Regional Commission Discusses Implications of Syrian Crisis on Jordanian and Lebanese Economies
The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is organizing an expert group meeting (EGM) on “The Implications of the Syrian Crisis on the Economies of Jordan and Lebanon” on Thursday, the 4th of July 2013 at its headquarters, Riad El Solh Square, Beirut. The meeting will be held with the participation of Jordanian Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Ibrahim Saif and Lebanese Minister of Economy and Trade Nicholas Nahas. Lebanese, Jordanian, Syrian, and international experts in economic and social development will also participate in the meeting.
The EGM aims to discuss the recent findings of the ESCWA studies regarding the link between Syrian economic growth and the Lebanese and Jordanian economies. The meeting will also discuss the findings of the recent ESCWA studies regarding the influx of Syrian labor and its impact on unemployment rates and wage levels in Jordan and Lebanon. The impact of the Syrian crisis on the Jordanian and Lebanese economies in case of a quick resolution or as a long term conflict is also one of the meeting’s agenda items.
The meeting will begin at 11 am with opening remarks by Chief Economist and Director of the Economic Development and Globalization Division at ESCWA Abdallah Al Dardari. The first session will tackle the impact of the Syrian Crisis on the Lebanese economy and will be chaired by Minister Nahas, whereas the second session will tackle the impact of the Syrian crisis on the Jordanian economy and will be chaired by Minister Saif.
ESCWA is calling for this meeting in the light of the Syrian crisis aggravation and the refugee flow to Jordan and Lebanon, which have caused economic and social repercussions. This meeting also comes in the framework of the Commission’s regional role as a framework for the formulation and harmonization of sectoral policies for member countries; a platform for congress and coordination; a home for expertise and knowledge; and as an information observatory.
In order to facilitate entrance to ESCWA headquarters, the Communication and Information Unit kindly requests media colleagues who wish to cover the meeting to confirm their attendance on the following numbers: 03-910930 or 76-046402.
