Senior Officials Segment of Commission’s 27th Session Concludes, Accepts Tunisia as New Member
Beirut, 8 May 2012 (ESCWA Communication and Information Unit)— The member countries of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) unanimously accepted the Republic of Tunisia as a member of the Commission, to be brought up to the United Nations Economic and Social Council for final approval. Meanwhile, member countries also welcomed each of Libya’s and Morocco’s requests to join ESCWA. This step final approval by the ministerial Session Wednesday and reviewing in the member countries’ capitals before a final decision is made.
The Senior Officials Segment ended with a discussion on higher managerial issues to be tackled by the ministerial level meetings, which will be opened by Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Miqati on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.
Senior Officials initially discussed the evaluations programme of ESCWA that is applied to the following subprogrammes: Development Account Projects, Business Processes and Intergovernmental Meetings to Promote Accountability, Credibility and Continuous Learning. This report provides an overview of the evaluation policy, actions taken to date and anticipated results.
ESCWA member countries approved amendments proposed to the work programme for the biennium 2012-2013. These changes are based on the new mandates that emanated from the sixty-fifth session of the General Assembly and the global and regional needs and challenges that have emerged since the Commission adopted the draft programme of work for 2012-2013 at its twenty-sixth session.
Participants presented the revised draft strategic framework for 2014-2015, which includes the overall programme orientation and focus areas and strategies pertained to the seven subprogrammes: Integrated Management of Natural Resources for Sustainable Development, Social Development, Economic Development and Integration, Information and Communications Technology for Regional Integration, Statistics for Evidence-Based Policymaking, Advancement of Women, and Conflict Mitigation and Development.
Participants also issued a report on the Senior Officials Segment, which concluded today. This report will be discussed during the Ministerial Session.
