Minister to Open 8th Session of UN-ESCWA Transport Committee
Lebanese Transport and Public Work Minister Mohammed As-Safadi will be opening the 8th Session of UN-ESCWA Committee on Transport at Safir Heliopolitan Hotel-Beirut on Tuesday 27 March 2007.
Participants in the meeting, scheduled to start at 10:00 am, will be representatives of ministries of transport, public works, interior, planning and economy as well as senior officials specialized in road, rail, maritime and traffic safety in UN-ESCWA member countries. Representatives of concerned international and regional organizations as observers including the League of Arab States (LAS), the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the Arab Union for Land Transport, the Union of Maritime Carriers, the Federation of Arab Ports, and the International Road Transport Union will also attend the meeting.
The meeting will be discussing the most important components of the Integrated Transport System in the Arab Mashreq (ITSAM), which include the Agreement on International Roads in the Arab Mashreq; priority routes M40 and M45; the Agreement on International Railways in the Arab Mashreq; the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the field of Maritime Transport in the Arab Mashreq; the national committees for the facilitation of transport and trade; road safety; the draft law on international multi-modal transport of goods in the Arab Mashreq; the ITSAM Methodological Framework; and the related geographical information system.
The Committee on Transport was established pursuant to UN-ESCWA resolution 213 (XIX) issued May 1997. The Committee is made up of representatives of member States and is entrusted to participate in the establishment and formulation of priorities for programs of work and medium-term plans in the field of transport; monitor developments in the field of transport in UN-ESCWA member States; monitor progress achieved in the activities of the ESCWA secretariat in the field of transport; ensure the participation of member States in international and regional conferences and coordinate member States efforts related to the implementation of resolutions and recommendations.
