Ambassadors of UNESCWA Countries to Meet Thursday Discussions will focus on Commission’s Activities and Support to Lebanon

In their first meeting after the end of war on Lebanon, the ambassadors of UNESCWA member countries will meet at 11am on Thursday 14 September 2006 at the UN House, Beirut. This meeting comes within the context of the regular Advisory Committee Meetings and is the second for this year. UNESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy will open the meeting with a statement addressed to the participants and media representatives. The Meeting will include a discussion of the measures taken by UNESCWA to ensure the continuity of its activities during the war on Lebanon. It will also include a discussion of the support and assistance to be given to the Lebanese government and people in order to assess the impact of the Israeli aggression and formulate plans for the reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts. Participants will discuss the work programme of UNESCWA until the end of the year and topics of interest to Arab countries that will be discussed at the United Nations General Assembly on 12 September 2006. The Advisory Committee was established by UNESCWA resolution 175 (XV) of 18 May 1989 to strengthen the role and performance of the Commission. It consists of heads of diplomatic missions in the host country of the Commission, as well as a high-level representative of the host country. The Advisory Committee plays a consultative role and functions as a major means of communication between member countries and the UNESCWA Secretariat and among member countries themselves on important matters requiring attention during the period between the biennial sessions of the Commissions.
