Regional Initiative to Promote Small-Scale Renewable Energy Technologies and Applications in Rural Areas of the Arab Region (REGEND): Factsheet

August 2022

The Regional Initiative to Promote Small-Scale Renewable Energy Applications in Rural Areas of the Arab Region (REGEND) aimed to improve livelihoods, economic benefits, social inclusion and gender equality in rural Arab communities. It addressed energy poverty, water scarcity, vulnerability to climate change and other natural resources challenges in three countries: Jordan, Lebanon and Tunisia.

The initiative provided appropriate small-scale renewable energy technologies for productive activities and entrepreneurial development. It emphasized human capacity and women’s empowerment in tandem with improved policy frameworks. The successful achievement of REGEND’s objectives and its sustainability and successful transfer of knowledge to different Arab rural communities necessitated a customized approach at the national and the regional levels.
