On 16 January, ESCWA and the Arab Women Organization concluded a virtual 5-day training on reporting to the Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW Committee).

Twenty-five participants from Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, the Sudan and Tunisia discussed the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women as an essential part of the international human rights framework. They were also introduced to the mandate and bylaws organizing the work of the CEDAW Committee and they learned the way national reports need to be prepared, submitted and discussed with the Committee.

The training aimed at developing the capacity of national women’s machineries, other relevant governmental institutions, and civil society organizations in preparing national reports more efficiently—a process often perceived as a burden by Governments which must prepare several reports on overlapping sustainable development issues.
