One of the key issues affecting the implementation and monitoring of urban-related SDGs at the national level is the lack of structured links and collaborative mechanisms between national and local government.
On 23 and 24 February, ESCWA participated in a virtual expert meeting organized by the Madrid City Council and UN-Habitat, in partnership with United Cities Local Governments, to discuss solutions to this problems, among which the role that voluntary local reviews of progress on SDG indicators can play to bridge that gap.
ESCWA also highlighted the major pressure on Arab cities caused by development inequalities, which exacerbate exclusion and vulnerability in one of the highly urbanized regions of the world.
