Third UN Global Road Safety Week

Under the auspices of Lebanese Minister of Interior and Municipalities Nohad El Mashnouk, and on the occasion of the Third UN Global Road Safety Week, ESCWA convened a workshop in Beirut, which gathered political, cultural and artistic personalities. The workshop was launched with a choir of Abi Bakr Al Siddiq School students who performed traditional songs promoting road safety. Following the opening, attending personalities signed the "Child Declaration on Road Safety".

The opening ceremony, which was presented by actress Carmen Lebbos, ESCWA public figure on the subject, and saw a touching statement by media figure Wissam Breidi. It also witnessed statements by Dr. Hala Sakr on behalf of Dr. Haifa Madi, Director of Health Protection and Promotion of the Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean of the World Health Organization (WHO); ESCWA Deputy Executive Secretary Nadim Khoury who spoke on behalf of Executive Secretary Rima Khalaf; and Brigadier Georges Lattouf who delivered the statement of Minister El Mashnouk.

The workshop was jointly organized with the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) and Universite Saint Joseph (USJ) from 27 to 29 May at the UN House. The ministries of transport, public works and interior in the Arab countries were represented. Experts in road safety in the ESCWA region, regional and international organizations, concerned civil society organizations, as well as scientific and academic institutions were also represented among participants.

The event closed with the graduation ceremony of USJ students specializing in Road Safety Management; a master's program run in cooperation between the university and the Renault Foundation. Students received their diplomas from USJ Rector Salim Daccache, Holder of the Chair and Director of the Master Ramzi Salame, ESCWA Deputy Executive Secretary Abdallah Al Dardari, and Vice-Chairman of Renault Foundation Sophie Chazelle.
