Regional training workshop on reporting to the CEDAW Committee

Beirut, 3 October 2019 (ESCWA)--To support States in preparing their national reports to the Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), ESCWA held a regional training workshop between 30 September and 2 October in Beirut, in partnership with the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN-Women) and the Arab Women Organization (AWO).
 
The training focused on latest reporting techniques, related skills and improvement of internal coordination capacities. Over 30 participants represented foreign ministries, national women’s machineries and civil society organizations from Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, State of Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
 
In her opening remarks, the Director of the Center for Women at ESCWA, Ms. Mehrinaz Al Awady, reiterated the regional commission’s commitment to support Arab States in fulfilling their international human rights obligations as set out in relevant international instruments and frameworks, including the CEDAW, Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
 
The workshop was facilitated by Ambassador Naela Gabr and Nahla Haidar, members of the CEDAW Committee, and Akram Khalifa, Regional Advisor on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment at ESCWA.
 
Another workshop will be organized before the end of this year in Tunisia to include other Arab countries.
