In celebration of the official admission of Algeria and Somalia, ESCWA organized a flag raising ceremony on 16 December, at the United Nations House in Beirut, in the presence of a score of officials and diplomats.
Algeria and Somalia became full members in ESCWA in 2020, when the Economic and Social Council adopted ESCWA resolution No. 20/2020 that welcomed the requests of the two States to join the Commission. However, COVID-19 closures have delayed the flag raising ceremony.
The admittance of these two new member States to ESCWA helps the organization provide a more coherent platform for its activities at the regional level, while engaging with them in support of their economic and social development.
