Private sector’s support to smallholders facing COVID-19

The role of the private sector in supporting small farmers in the Arab region in building their resilience to crises like COVID-19 was the subject of a virtual seminar held on 18 June by ESCWA and FAO RNE.

As farmers in the Arab region struggle to sustain their livelihoods, the pandemic has increased their vulnerability by disrupting production, harvesting and delivery along the agricultural value chain. It has also affected the continuity of supplies to consumers.

Participants discussed how agri-food innovation, technology, public-private partnerships and regional cooperation can counteract the devastating impacts of the pandemic on the agricultural sector. They also tackled the need for ensuring proper financial investments in these areas.
