International Translation Day is celebrated annually to stress the importance of translation in enriching transboundary knowledge. Translation is a cornerstone of peacebuilding, the culture of dialogue and tolerance.
To mark the occasion, ESCWA hosted the Chief of the Conference Management Section, Ms. Nidale Noun, in a live broadcast of its “Ask an ESCWA expert” series, during which she addressed the specificities of translation as an ever-evolving profession and an integral part of the communication process at the United Nations. An opinion poll undertaken before the interview showed that, despite rapid developments in machine translation, the public at large still believes that only an experienced translator can truly reap its benefits.
International Translation Day 2020 was also commemorated with a visit by ESCWA translators to the School of Translators and Interpreters at Saint-Joseph University of Beirut. Academics, language students and professionals renewed their common commitment to multilingualism and transboundary dialogue for a world free of obstacles to peace.
