ESCWA Executive Secretary Rola Dashti participated in the Africa Regional Review of the implementation of the Istanbul Program of Action (IPoA) for the least developed countries (LDCs). The conference, which was held from 22 to 26 February, was organized jointly by UN-OHRLLS, UNECA and the Government of Malawi.
During a panel on “Mobilizing resources for sustainable development in African LDCs”, Dashti underlined the role of ESCWA in helping Arab LDCs assess their structural challenges and emerging issues, and identify solutions to address them. She stressed the need to replicate good practices and lessons learned from IPoA implementation throughout world regions.
On the subject of resource mobilization, Dashti highlighted solutions to increase fiscal space in LDCs, through adopting fair, progressive and transparent tax systems; making aid more predictable, effective and aligned with national priorities; bringing debt to sustainable levels and negotiating more favourable conditions for LDCs; and increasing South-South cooperation.
