The ESCWA Committee on Technology for Development held its 3rd session virtually, on 15 and 16 February, to follow up on progress in technology-related fields in Arab countries since its 2nd session held in March 2019. Participants also reviewed technology activities implemented by the ESCWA secretariat, including technical cooperation services and activities of the ESCWA Technology Centre.
Member State representatives discussed the regional priorities for the coming years in the field of technology for development and recommended that focus be placed on digital cooperation, e-government and open government, e-trade, fintech, digital accessibility, and on leveraging innovation and new technologies for a rapid and effective response to crises, such as COVID-19, conflicts and disasters.
On 11 February, on the sidelines of its current session, the Committee delved into the subject of big data during a common webinar with the ESCWA Statistical Committee on “localized big data for effective decision-making in crisis situations”.
