The Chatham House MENA Programme, in collaboration with the International Monetary Fund, held a webinar on 10 February to examine economic policy prospects and challenges across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and the structural reforms required to enhance diversification efforts and increase job creation.
ESCWA Executive Secretary Rola Dashti participated in the webinar and touched on the GCC economies from a macro perspective, highlighting the urgency to revisit the social contract to foster a middle class that generates wealth to the economy and is not dependent on government spending.
Dashti also pointed out that the COVID-19 pandemic offered an opportunity for countries to restructure and rethink their economic activities, calling on them to recover forward, not backward.
