Sustainable development remains out of reach in the occupied Palestinian territory under protracted Israeli occupation, and policies and practices.
This was among the observations of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Note on the “Economic and social repercussions of the Israeli occupation on the living conditions of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and of the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan”, which covered the period extending from 1 April 2019 to 31 March 2020 and was prepared by ESCWA.
The Note warned of further deterioration due to COVID-19, calling for the immediate halt of measures hindering efforts to combat the pandemic and for the provision of assistance to Palestinians in facing the crisis. The Note also reiterated that the Israeli decision to impose its laws, jurisdiction and administration in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights was null and void and without international legal effect. It finally underlined that adhering to international law and ensuring that no party enjoys impunity were essential to ensure peace and justice for all those living in the region.
