Several Arab economies heavily rely on fossil fuels as a source of energy and revenue, as more than 95% of their energy supply is derived from oil and natural gas. On 26 August, ESCWA and the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) virtually met together to identify areas of cooperation.
ESCWA Executive Secretary Rola Dashti stressed the need to help member States become exporters of energy instead of oil, in line with achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
Participants discussed the importance of enhancing cooperation over energy, where both organizations can conduct research and targeted capacity building workshops on topics related to energy transition and sustainable production of fossil fuels.
