To promote better inclusion of persons with disabilities in the labour market in Lebanon, ESCWA held on 10 February a virtual consultation meeting which highlighted barriers to the employment of persons with disabilities.
Participants agreed that unemployment among persons with disabilities remained too high, especially for women and persons living with cognitive disabilities. The quota system set in Law 2000/220 on the rights of persons with disabilities had not yet been implemented, and misconceptions and prejudices still prevailed. Employers from the public and private sectors also indicated that the cost of implementing reasonable accommodation remained prohibitively expensive.
The meeting concluded with recommendations on means to uphold the right of persons with disabilities to decent work opportunities, including on the development of specific accessibility and awareness-raising programmes; delivery of inclusive and accessible financial services; and disability inclusion into all development processes.
