ESCWA is supporting the Ministry of Women and Human Rights Development in Somalia in its efforts to address violence against women and girls. In this context, ESCWA is holding a national validation workshop to discuss and review the country’s Strategy on Combating Violence against Women and Girls.
Participants include representatives from Somali line ministries, civil society and United Nations agencies.
As part of the finalization process for Somalia’s first-ever National Strategy for Ending Violence against Women and Girls the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), in partnership with the Ministry of Women and Human Rights Development (MoWHRD) in Somalia, held a national validation workshop to review and discuss the Strategy.
The workshop was held in Mogadishu, Somalia (AAIA zone), More than 40 male and female representatives from Somali line ministries, civil society and UN agencies participated.
The workshop was concluded with words from UNFPA, UN Women, UNDP, UNICEF, ESCWA, civil society, female MPs, and HE Amina Hassan, acting Minister of Women and Human Rights Development, who validated the Strategy.

An overview of the proposed Strategy included a discussion of the process for drafting the strategy and the key framework utilized for devising the strategic outcomes and outputs.
Working Group discussions of the Strategy’s outcomes, outputs and activities were held so that participants better understood its contents and were able to provide feedback and recommendations.
The discussion then focused on which organizations/agencies are best suited to lead or support on a particular indicator and/or activity. The discussion then turned to opportunities for collaboration between governmental and CSOs, as well as UN agencies.
The final session involved Working Group discussions of the Strategy’s baselines and targets with the aim of identifying data and ensuring actionable targets.
