This expert group meeting, organized by ESCWA, focuses on a report jointly produced by ESCWA, the United Nations Development Programme and the United Nations Children’s Fund, and titled “Social Expenditure Monitor for Arab States: Toward Making Budgets more Equitable, Efficient and Effective to Achieve the SDGs”.
The report is considered the first of its kind in the region as it analyzes the results and major trends of social expenditure for Arab States. It sheds light on the importance of social spending for supporting and promoting inclusive growth in the region, including supporting recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. It also discusses the need to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of spending and fiscal sustainability, and implement public financial management reforms toward fostering inclusive development in the Arab region.
